While circumlocution is generally used to avoid stating something directly or due to lack of a specific term, periphrasis is more often used for rhetorical effect or to add emphasis or clarity. That being said, there can be considerable overlap between the two concepts in practice. Both involve using more words than strictly necessary, and both can be used for stylistic or rhetorical effect. However, it's worth noting that while circumlocution is often seen as a drawback in communication due to its indirectness and inefficiency, periphrasis can be a powerful tool in the hands of a skilled writer or speaker.


If a language does not have a specific term for a concept, and speakers must use multiple words to express that concept, this could be considered a form of circumlocution. However, it might also be more specifically termed as a "lexical gap" or a "lacuna." A lexical gap refers to a concept for which no word exists in a given language.

For instance, in English, there is no single word to describe the day after tomorrow. We express it as a phrase: "the day after tomorrow." In German, however, there is a specific word for this concept: "übermorgen."

What do we mean when we say ASL is a visual-gestural language?

The gestures in ASL are highly structured and follow specific linguistic rules. The handshape, orientation, movement, and location of the hands are essential components of ASL signs.

Spatial grammar: ASL incorporates the use of space and spatial relationships to convey meaning. The signing space in front of the signer's body represents different grammatical categories and functions. Spatial grammar allows for spatial agreement, depicting verb-object relationships, and indicating directionality and locational information.

If we want to understand how signs work together in sentences it helps

The parts of speech are important because they help us to understand how words work together in sentences.

For example, we know that a noun can be modified by an adjective, and that a verb can be modified by an adverb.

This knowledge helps us to sign and understand signed sentences correctly.

An aspect of morphology has to do with being able to understand something called "the parts of speech." 

In linguistics, the parts of speech are the categories that words (or signs) are divided into based on their grammatical function. The most common parts of speech in English are:

Nouns: Names of people, places, things, or ideas.
Verbs: Words that describe actions or states of being.
Adjectives: Words that describe nouns.
Adverbs: Words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

The direction in which your body is facing (during role shift) influences the meaning of the sign or signs you are doing. Thus turning your body at an angle (during role shift) can be considered morphemic. (Or in other words turning or shifting your body can create meaning.) The angle of the body (in the situation of role shift) creates a morpheme.


Artificial intelligence: knowledge of the principles, structure, and vocabulary of American Sign Language (ASL), including its historical development and use in the Deaf community. However, because ASL is a visual language that relies heavily on hand signs, facial expressions, and body language, AI (early versions) are unable to express or interpret ASL directly as early AI doesn't have the ability to view or produce visual content.

A term that is similar to ASL corpora is ASL datasets or ASL video libraries. These terms also refer to sets of ASL video data that can be used for research or education purposes.

The IPA symbols themselves do not have denotative or connotative meanings; rather, they are used to represent the sounds of different languages.

Dr. Bill: We can use the word "home" or the sign "HOME" as an example of connotation in the Deaf community is the subjectively different interpretation and valuation of the act of "going home." For many Hearing students who are away from home at a boarding or military school, the idea of going home (often but not always) involves a sense of returning to a place where the occupants share a history of familial interaction and communication with individuals who are culturally similar to you.  Contrast that with the (all too common) interpretation in the mind of a Deaf student of the meaning of the phrase "going home" (or "GO HOME") as being forced to return to a place of linguistic isolation amongst individuals who are culturally quite different.  Many Deaf feel more at home while attending a residential Deaf School program than they do at the residence of their parents and family.  The reasons for this can be and typically are expanded on in textbooks regarding Deaf Culture.  From a linguistics standpoint the difference in interpretation and valuation of the meaning of the term "home" is connotative."


What is the difference between subjective and connotative?

Subjective and connotative are related but distinct concepts in linguistics.

Connotations may be positive, negative, or neutral, and can vary depending on the cultural context, personal experience, and social attitudes.

In summary, subjectivity is related to personal experience and opinion, while connotation is related to the emotional and cultural associations of a word. While both subjectivity and connotation can influence meaning, they are distinct concepts and should not be used interchangeably.

[056-59 4th Edition: Dr. Bill's notes] Doing signs quickly at high speeds (for example, signing a sentence) causes structural changes in the  signs. (Changes to the articulatory bundle of the signs). When you do two signs together quickly, one of two things will happen: Possibility #1. There will be changes to the meaning of those signs. For example "compounds." (ASL example: "GOODNIGHT" = a greeting or parting statement.  Possibility #2. There will be no changes to the meaning of those signs.  For example "fast signing." (ASL example: "WHY NOT?")

[56-60] Producing signs in a sequence changes the structure of those signs. There are a bunch of "rules" defining the changes that happen to signs when you do them in a sequence. What is a "TEMPORAL ASPECT MARKER?"
Well, "TEMPORAL" = TIME
"ASPECT" = HOW or WAY
"MARKER" = MARK = INDICATE = SHOW

Thus the phrase "temporal aspect marker" means:
Something that shows how the subject was done in regards to time.
A movement or inflection of a sign that helps us understand if the sign was done continually, repeatedly, hurriedly, etc.
