CASE: The American Sign Language (ASL) sign for "case"

The way to sign CASE would be highly dependent on the context in which you are using it.

 

If you are using it to mean "situation or circumstance," you could sign:

 

SITUATION:

 

or

 

AWFUL:


 

If you are using CASE in the way of "an argument used to support a viewpoint," you could sign:

 

EVIDENCE:


 

If you mean CASE related to "moral conduct," you could use the sign for:

 

REASON / REALIZE:


 

If you are using CASE in the context of "existence or the state of things," you can sign:

 

HAVE:

 

or

 

NOT HAVE:


 

If you are discussing a CASE as in a "suitcase" or "briefcase," you would sign:

 

SUITCASE / PURSE / BRIEFCASE / BAG:


 

Question: How do you sign "glass case"?

Answer:
How you sign things often depends on the amount of context that exists, how familiar your signing partner or audience is with the topic, and what you have most recently or previously discussed.

Also, the sign "glass" has several regional variations.

As far as the "case" is concerned -- if there is not much context (as in you are not sure of any of the specifics of the look or layout of the case) and if your conversation partner is bilingual -- spell case.

Or sign "box."
Or sign "shelves."

Or if you know the shape of the case you can depict the case using (classifiers) depictive signing.

Interestingly, the same handshapes that are used to show a "couch" -- can often be used to show a case.
