Notes:

Question:
Are the differences between the various signs for cricket "regional" differences?  (As in "regional variation"?)

Response:

I would suggest that the vast majority of folks don't have a specific sign for "cricket" -- or at least we didn't until vlogging and posts like this came about. So I wouldn't call the differences in the sign CRICKET "regional" in the same way different versions of the sign "computer" exist. Rather I'd refer to such differences as "sporadic."
Not in the sense of occurring at irregular intervals -- but rather in the sense of "scattered or isolated."

For example compare these two situations:

1. In Sacramento we sign cricket this way...

versus

2. [A group of friends walks into a restaurant in Sacramento to hang out and catch up. A random conversation thread gets one of them to wondering about the sign for "cricket."] Hey have you seen a sign for cricket? [Most shake their heads or respond "spell it." One person (who happens to teach children) waves his/her/their hand and shows a sign for cricket. Depending on the version, half of the group sneer, a couple "claim" to have seen it, one or two suddenly remember a different version from their youth. One makes up a new sign that depicts a characteristic of a cricket. They all banter about it for a few minutes -- the food arrives, they start arguing about politics or accommodations. No one cares anymore about the sign for cricket.]

Five years later a different Deaf group walks into a restaurant in Sacramento...
