DEFAULT: The American Sign Language (ASL) sign for "default"

 

 

There are a number of ways to sign the concept of "default" in ASL -- depending on the context and the specific meaning.

DEFAULT:

 

 

Many signers just spell the word "default."
During spelling of "default" the letters "AUL" often get blended.

If by "default" you mean "automatically" then use the AUTOMATIC sign:

AUTOMATIC: Version: dominant hand: X, non-dominant hand: flat

AUTOMATIC: Version: dominant hand: curved, non-dominant hand: flat

AUTOMATIC: Version: dominant hand: X, non-dominant hand: 1 (index finger)

Notes:
The letters NDH are an is an abbreviation for nondominant hand
The letters DH are an abbreviation for dominant hand

If by "default" you mean routine, same old same old, you can use the sign:
SAME-SAME (two Y-hands, repeated circular movement)


If by "default" you mean normal, typical, natural, etc., use the sign:
NORMAL

If by "default" you mean fallback, revert to, retrace, or go back to, use the sign:
STEP-BACK (metaphor / depiction/ idiomatic)

If by "default" you mean a reserve or additional copy of data kept in case the original data is lost, use the sign:
BEHIND, backup, reserve ...

If by "default" you mean a person or group's typical way of being or doing something, use the sign:
TEND THEIR-THEIR

If by "default" you mean a habit, custom, or tradition, use the sign:
HABIT

If by "default" you are referring to defaulting on an obligation, you can use signs such as:
NOT SATISFY
NOT TAKE-CARE-OF
NOT END (not complete)
FAIL

Sometimes the SELF sign is a good choice to mean: on its own, automatically, and similar concepts.
For example...
Default behavior of a program:
IT PROGRAM ITSELF WILL ... (followed by whatever the behavior is.) "The program on its own will ..."

"Default" as in the pre-set or standard options that are selected by a system unless the user chooses otherwise:
PREVIOUS-to SET-up
Example: The computer will use the default settings unless you customize them.

"Default" as in to fail to pay back a loan:
NOT PAY (fs)-BACK

If you do not pay your mortgage for several months, you may default on your loan.
SUPPOSE BANK LEND-to-you FOR BUY HOUSE, IF MANY MONTHS YOU NOT PAY BACK, PROCRASTINATE BANK MAYBE TEAR CONTRACT PUNISH YOU

drop in credit score
difficulty getting future loans
sue you
wage garnishment
seizure of assets
YOUR HOUSE THEY SEIZE KICK-OUT YOU

"Default" can mean a victory awarded because the opposing team or competitor failed to participate or comply.
OUR TEAM WON, WHY? OTHER TEAM NOT SHOW-UP. GIVE-to-us WIN (or points)

Default sometimes implies "futurity" (something will happen)
WILL (future)

The sign labeled as "SPECIAL" can be used to mean:
except
or
unless

"Default" as in to automatically select a particular option or setting if no alternative is specified.
The program defaults to English, but you can choose another language.
UNLESS YOU PICK

"Default" as in something happens because other options or candidates are unavailable or absent:
She was appointed the project manager by default since no one else volunteered...
RESPONSIBLE-put-on-[that person] FOR MANAGE PROJECT. WHY-(rhetorical)? ZERO OTHER VOLUNTEER.

Sometimes we can create the meaning of default by using the sign:
ALWAYS
Her default reaction to any surprise was laughter.
HAPPEN SHE SURPRISE, SHE ALWAYS LAUGH SHE.

Default is sometimes signed as:
FIRST CHOICE
(The first choice they make is their default choice.)

Default is sometimes signed as:
READY THERE
(It is there, ready for you).

Default is sometimes signed as:
TEND-to INSTANT (snap fingers)
-- as in a person's behavior in response to a stimulus.

Default is sometimes signed as:
REGULAR
-- as in a person's regular setup for playing a game.
