HEDGEHOG: The
American Sign Language (ASL) sign for "hedgehog"
HEDGEHOG:
The sign for "hedgehog" is ... well, um...there really isn't a
widespread sign for hedgehog here in America.
What you can do is use your hands to show what one looks like.
You form your non-dominant hand into a fist (representing the
hedgehog in a ball), then you use form your dominant hand into a
"five hand" and you bend the fingers at the large knuckles but keep
the smaller knuckles straight (so that your fingers are jutting out
like quills). You hold your non-dominant hand (the fist) palm-side
toward the ground and you put your dominant hand (the quills) near
the wrist of the non-dominant hand and move the quills forward and
over the front of the fist -- thus showing a ball covered with
quills.
Or the "four hand" can be used instead of the "five hand"

Hedgies sort of resemble much smaller porcupines. However, I'm sending a few pics of our little Sylvia so that you might see for yourself. The first is a side view. The second shows her quills. The last shows the hedgie's ability to roll up in a neat little ball. This is a defense mechanism, so she actually doesn't do this much anymore. Still, kind of interesting. :)- Lessa
