American Sign Language: "later"

Note: There are a couple versions of "later." The one on the palm is sort of like showing a clock.
The other sign for "later" does the sign "future" using an "L" handshape.

Later dude:

The tip of the thumb is on the palm of the non-dominant hand.

Notes:

Question: A student asks:
What's the difference between sign for "half hour" & the sign "later"?

Response:
There are multiple ways to sign "half-hour" and/or later. For example the concept of "later" in the phrase "see you later" is signed totally different from the general sign for "later" that is done on the non-dominant palm. See the examples below. In general though the difference you are looking for is probably in the position of the thumb. The general sign labeled as LATER (which can also be used to mean things such as "after a while") tends to use an "L" handshape. When done on the palm it is the tip of the thumb that makes contact with the palm. Compare that with the sign HALF-HOUR in which it is the index-finger side of the hand that makes contact with the non-dominant hand.

To differentiate "LATER" from "HALF-HOUR" I recommend (these days) using the "flat hand" version of HALF-HOUR.
