Notes:
ASTHMA: Different signs are used for ASTHMA within the Deaf
community. Many just sign BREATHE-(difficult) while mouthing
"asthma" and spelling A-S-T-H-M-A the first time it comes up in a
conversation. Some people initialize the sign for BREATHE with "A"
handshapes. Others do a version of the sign for LUNGS (while
optionally mouthing the word "asthma") and using a slightly negative
facial expression.
SHORT-OF-BREATH: This can be shown by doing the BREATHE sign with
difficulty but at some point in a conversation devoted to BREATHING
issues you may need to become more specific about various terms. The
sign "SHORT/brief" has been used in the phrase "short of breath" in
one or more medical-related videos describing asthma as signed by
skilled native signers. There are those who will criticize using
"SHORT BREATHE" to mean short of breath but then again, some people
will criticize almost anything. Just make sure you are familiar with
a variety of approaches to describing "breathing"-related issues.
