Instructional Assistant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing:

Essential duties and responsibilities of an instructional assistant for the Deaf and hard of hearing typically include but are not limited to:
1. Support students' instructional programs by assisting with the implementation of educational materials, lesson plans, and technology, based on the assessed needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students.
2. Monitor, assist, and support students during teacher-directed whole group, small group, individualized instruction, and independent work activities, ensuring effective communication and comprehension.
3. Assist teacher(s) with classroom management and maintaining a safe, conducive learning environment, using positive behavior supports and appropriate interventions when necessary.
4. Provide follow-up and review after teacher-directed instruction, reinforcing learned behaviors and skills, including the use of assistive technology and visual aids specific to Deaf and hard of hearing students.
5. Assist in observing, recording, and maintaining data about student performance, behavior, and progress, while maintaining strict confidentiality.
6. Support the development and maintenance of students' daily living needs, including personal care, hygiene, and mobility assistance as necessary.
7. Assist with the administration of appropriate assessments and evaluation of student progress, including preparing progress reports and maintaining open lines of communication with students and parents/guardians.
8. Serve as a communication facilitator between Deaf and hard of hearing students and their Hearing peers, teachers, and staff, using sign language or other appropriate communication methods.
9. Assist with the preparation and adaptation of instructional materials to meet the specific needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students.
10. Participate in IEP (Individualized Education Program) meetings and contribute insights on student progress and needs.
11. Assist with arrival, departure, and transportation of students as needed, including monitoring health status during transit.
12. Maintain required certifications by participating in workshops and in-service training sessions, staying current with best practices in Deaf education.
13. Follow district policies and procedures concerning education, health, safety, and the wellbeing of students, adhering to all relevant state and federal laws.
14. Assist with emergency procedures and participate in safety drills, ensuring the specific needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students are met during these events.
15. Perform clerical tasks associated with instructional activities and prepare the classroom for various learning activities.

Starting hourly pay in the mid-2020's for an instructional assistant for the Deaf and hard of hearing will likely range between approximately $15.19 and $27.34. (Pasco County, 2024)
