Question:
"How do you sign the word population?"
Answer:
For a way to sign "population," in context you can use the non-initialized version of the "GROUP" sign.
See GROUP-[non-initialized] at: https://youtu.be/CBvbmM7dHaY
That isn't the only way to sign "population."
GROUP-[non-initialized] can have a variety of meanings depending on context and is simply one of several ways that could be used to refer to a "population."
The sign for group is done by using curved-5-hands (or "loose claw
hands"). Hold your hands up -- palms facing slightly forward. Move
your hands forward as you twist the palms slightly backward. The
movement should look as if you are sliding your hands around a ball.

Note: I sometimes refer to the above sign as the "CLUSTER" sign, but
that is just me. It could also be labeled as "CATEGORY."
See: CLUSTER
Sometimes you might see "population" signed as "INDEX-THEY PEOPLE," "depiction: 'SCADS-of,'" "PEOPLE SCADS-of," PEOPLE LIVE THAT CITY, PEOPLE LIVE THAT COUNTRY, and so forth. For an example of the "SCADS-of" sign see: https://youtu.be/lZ1pYiKLbdI Note:
That version of SCADS-of is marked (uses a non-manual marker facial expression) to show a huge crowd. It can be done with a more neutral facial expression.
POPULATION: (non-marked version of) "scads of" / crowd on surface / group spread over surface:
