MY MOM WASHING-MACHINE EVERYDAY. I-HELP-HER. WASHING-MACHINE I (shift your body to face slightly to the right, open lid of washing machine" (face forward again) CLOTHES DIRTY (shift your body slightly to the left-act out putting dirty clothes into the washer). PANTS, SHIRT, SOCKS, UNDERWEAR "throw-into washer." MY HEARING AID? I DON'T-LIKE. Take-off-HEARING-AID, (Crain your neck, look for mom, check both directions while keeping the right hand in an "x" handshape then change your handshape into the "PUT" sign and quickly put the hearing aid into the washer and close the lid. Clasp your hands, smile with wide eyes, and try to look innocent." MOM FIND, MAD WILL!
Story 8, sample English interpretation:
Everyday I help my mom do the laundry. I load dirty clothes --pants, shirts, socks, and underwear into the washer. I don’t like my hearing aid. When mom isn’t looking I put it in the washer and try to look innocent. Mom finds out? She'll be mad!
Signing notes:
The sign for shirt can be done with one hand or two. If you do it with one hand though it might be mistaken for the sign "volunteer."
Classifier: H. The "H" handshape can be used to show things like a belt or a tie.
A student asks: When signing "Do you have a backpack?", do you sign 'backpack' then 'have', then 'you'? Also, when signing 'have' in that sentence, do you use the "have" sign or do you show possession using the "b" sign
Response:
You can either topicalize the sentence (Object, Subject Verb) or you can just use Subject Verb Object.
In general it is fine to just sign, YOU HAVE BACKPACK?
Consider the differences in these two English sentences:
1. Do you have a backpack?
2. Do you have the backpack?
These two sentences have slightly different meanings.
With enough context either sentence could be expressed via signing YOU HAVE BACKPACK?
The sentence "YOU HAVE BACKPACK" could be interpreted either way, "a backpack" or "the backpack" but if there has been no previous discussion it tends to default to "a backpack." If there has been previous discussion regarding a specific backpack the phase "YOU HAVE BACKPACK" could be interpreted (in that context) to mean "Do you have the backpack?" or "Do you have that backpack (that we discussed earlier)."
Consider that the sentence "BACKPACK, HAVE YOU?" is actually signed as:
"BACKPACK?-(slight pause, raised eyebrows) HAVE YOU?-(raised eyebrows)
The pause and raised eyebrows are used to introduce or reintroduce the concept "backpack" into the conversation. We then ask a question about it.
In other words BACKPACK? HAVE YOU? is asking something such as:
"Do you recall the backpack you used to have? Do you have it with you?"
"Do you remember the backpack we discussed? Did you bring it?"
The sentence "Do you have a backpack?" might also be signed as YOU HAVE BACKPACK do-YOU? It is not necessary to repeat the pronoun at the end of a sentence but repeating the pronoun while raising your eyebrows can help make it clear you expect a yes or no answer. Repeating the pronoun is sometimes referred to as "pronoun copy." Notice that the "do" in "do-YOU" is lowercase. That is because during pronoun copy the "do" is not signed with a separate sign but rather is expressed via a combination of raised eyebrows and the sign YOU.
As far as your question regarding which sign to use for possession in the sentence "Do you have a backpack?" -- we definitely want to use the sign HAVE which uses bent hands. See "HAVE." Also the sign HAVE is often done with just one hand.
A minor distinction regarding the handshape for flat-hand possessive signs such as MY / YOUR / THEIR and similar signs -- the handshape is not actually a "B" hand. The signs MY / YOUR / THEIR use a flat-hand in which the thumb is alongside the palm, not bent across it.
A "B" hand bends the thumb a little bit over / across the palm.
A "flat hand" positions the thumb alongside the palm.
