Note: Diet Soda:

"On average, for each diet soft drink our participants drank per day, they were 65 percent more likely to become overweight during the next seven to eight years, and 41 percent more likely to become obese," said Sharon Fowler, M.P.H., faculty associate in the division of clinical epidemiology in the Health Science Center's department of medicine.

Note: Diet Soda:

A University of Texas study found that people who drink diet soda daily have a 70% larger waist size after 10 years compared with non-soda drinkers.
Frequent users, who said they consumed two or more diet sodas a day, experienced waist circumference increases that were 500 percent greater than those of non-users.

Note: Milk:

In a recent study done by the University of Maine, researchers have found that adults up to the age of 98 who had a higher intake of milk and milk products scored significantly higher on memory and other brain function tests than those who drank little to no milk. The study showed that the milk drinkers were five times less likely to fail the cognitive tests compared to the non milk drinkers.

Participants who consumed dairy products at least once a day had "significantly higher scores on multiple domains of cognitive function" compared with those who never or rarely consumed dairy foods. In addition, those who reported eating dairy foods between two and four times a week performed significantly better on some of the tests than those who ate dairy foods once a week. The association between greater dairy food consumption and mental performance remained significant after adjusting for a number of risk factors.

Note: Cinnamon / Blood-Sugar

Extracts of cinnamon increase insulin activity several-fold. In a human study involving people with type 2 diabetes participants experienced improvements in blood glucose ranging from 18 to 29%.

Khan, A.; et. al. (2003) "Cinnamon Improves Glucose and Lipids of People With Type 2 Diabetes" Diabetes Care, vol. 26, pages 3215-3218, 2003. (Retrieved from: http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/26/12/3215.full)

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—A total of 60 people with type 2 diabetes, 30 men and 30 women aged 52.2 ± 6.32 years, were divided randomly into six groups. Groups 1, 2, and 3 consumed 1, 3, or 6 g of cinnamon daily, respectively, and groups 4, 5, and 6 were given placebo capsules corresponding to the number of capsules consumed for the three levels of cinnamon. The cinnamon was consumed for 40 days followed by a 20-day washout period.

RESULTS—After 40 days, all three levels of cinnamon reduced the mean fasting serum glucose (18--29%), triglyceride (23--30%), LDL cholesterol (7--27%), and total cholesterol (12--26%) levels; no significant changes were noted in the placebo groups.
